| Natalia M. McKendry is committed to engaging, activating, and educating vulnerable populations with available resources in the community and linking with organizations and people who strive for social justice and health parity. A graduate of St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA with a BA in Political Science, McKendry earned her Master’s in Public Health from Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA through their Executive Master’s in Public Health Program. In addition, she is also trained as a Spanish Medical Interpreter which she earned through Phoenix Language Services in Philadelphia, PA. Additionally, McKendry has professional training in grant writing, fundraising, and executive director leadership from the Non-Profit Center at LaSalle University’s School of Business in Philadelphia, PA. With over a decade of supervisory experience in the health, human services, and non-profit sectors, Natalia Molina McKendry serves the Verde Valley in a variety of capacities. She is a recent resident to the Verde Valley, having moved here from outside of Philadelphia, PA, in June of 2009. In a short amount of time, McKendry has immersed herself in the Verde Valley community and serves in the following capacities: Housing Commissioner for the City of Sedona, Advisory Board Member for the United Way of the Verde Valley, member of the Greater Sedona Substance Abuse Coalition, Keep Sedona Beautiful, the Hummingbird Society, the American Public Health Association, and the Alliance for Hispanic Health. She is also an active member of St. John Vianney Roman Catholic Church in Sedona, Arizona and is Coordinator of OLLI or Osher Lifelong Learning Institute in Sedona. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI as it is affectionately known) at Yavapai College is a unique educational and social program offered to meet the needs of intellectually and socially active retirees. Simply stated, OLLI is like a college for retirees with the added bonus that there are no grades, no tests, no pressure that a student would find in an academic environment. People attend OLLI because they have a deep love of learning. According to many sources, including Science Daily (March 3, 2010) — UC Irvine neurobiologists are providing the first visual evidence that learning promotes brain health and, therefore, that mental stimulation could limit the debilitating effects of aging on memory and the mind. Recent articles published in AARP have also indicated that mental activity such as learning a new skill or taking on puzzles keeps the mind young and youthful. States Natalia Molina McKendry about her experience with students and teachers at OLLI, “The students and teachers at OLLI defy and shatter the stereotypes about retired people. I feel that the OLLI members are vibrant and dynamic because they are mentally, socially, and spiritually stimulated with what they learn in their classes and workshops. This then spills into the community at large in the Verde Valley. Many of our active students are also leaders in the community. But what impressed me the most is the youthful disposition of the members. It is not a coincidence though.
